- Holds a degree in Business Administration from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (1991) and a masters in International Relations from Ohio University, USA (1994).

- Started his international career in 1994 at the University Research Corporation, a Washington DC-based international consultancy contracted by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

- Returned to Brazil in 1995, working at steel companies Companhia Siderúrgica de São Paulo and Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN) after their privatization.

- In 2000, took up an invitation to run the business development area of Elefante S.A., an agenda-planning site for the investment portfolio of asset management firm GP Investimentos.

- Worked for the Minas Gerais state government from 2005 to 2008, first as an external consultant to help attract investments to the state, then as Director of the Minas Gerais State Institute of Integrated Development (INDI).
